The Solar Show in Manila, Philippines on 3 and 4 June 2015 - REC showcases its capabilities as an integrated solar energy solutions provider
At the two-day exhibition, REC’s TwinPeak Series and the REC SolarBox Hybrid Solution will be on display. REC will be presenting its solar manufacturing value chain where visitors will have an in-depth understanding of how solar panels are made from silicon, wafers and cells. The three exhibits on display during the trade show/event reinforce REC’s pole position as a leading global provider of solar energy solutions. It also demonstrates that REC is constantly at the forefront of solar technology and innovation.
Jen Tan, REC’s Vice President for Sales and Marketing in Asia-Pacific said, “As a leading global provider of solar energy solutions, we want to make a difference in helping to power the world around us. Just last month, Philippines declared a state of emergency in which a 200-megawatt (MW) power shortage resulted in a blackout across the country for some days of April and May. This highlighted the importance of alternative electricity sources. Renewable solar energy is definitely attractive to a tropical country like Philippines with abundance of free energy directly from the sun.”
She added, “On the back of growing energy demand and the power supply shortage, the Philippines government has introduced measures in ensuring a more sustainable future for the country. Some of these initiatives include a US$0.22 cents feed-in-tariff [FIT] for up to 500MW of solar installations as well as a net metering program for its residential market.”
There has been a growing demand for renewable solar energy in the residential and commercial rooftop segments as well as integration of PVs in island grids and off-grid resorts. Solar adoption is gaining traction amongst many local households with the potential for solar expected to exceed the National Renewable Energy Plan’s target of 1,528MW by 2013.
According to the Department of Energy’s 2009-2030 Power Development Plan, the country's energy consumption is forecasted to reach 149,067 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by 2030. This is a big increase from the previous estimated demand of 86,809 GWh by 2018 and the actual demand of 55,417 GWh in 2008. Peak demand is likely to reach 14,311 GWh by 2018 and increase to 24,534 GWh by 2030, a significant jump from 2008's estimate of 9,226 GWh.
Furthermore, the Philippines Sustainable Energy Finance program (SEF) was launched in 2008, a first in the ASEAN region. Since then, SEF has been building a sustainable market capacity to develop and finance commercial investments that promote the use of new energy resources and reduction of carbon emissions.
These initiatives by the policy-makers in Philippines highlight the growing importance of solar in the country.
